SMP Volunteer Administrative Assistant

SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program) & SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol)
Purpose of Position
- Provide administrative support to the SMP program
- Duties include data entry, filing, and other clerical tasks
Responsible To
- SHIP/SMP Coordinator
Responsibilities
- Collect and report data on SMP activities using various methods (including web-based tools)
- Assist with organizational tasks (filing, stuffing packets, copying training/outreach materials)
- Handle client information with strict confidentiality
- Provide additional administrative support as needed
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to get along well with others
- Criminal justice background (preferred)
- Strong organizational skills
- Computer and internet proficiency
- Access to internet and email
- Sensitive and caring attitude
- Good written and oral communication skills
Time Commitment
- Minimum of one year
- Agreed-upon number of volunteer hours per month
Volunteer SHIP/SMP Counselor

SHIP & SMP
Purpose of Position
- Provide health insurance information, assistance, and referral services
- Serve individuals age 50+ and Medicare beneficiaries of any age
Responsible To
- SHIP Coordinator
Responsibilities
- Complete certification training through the Maryland SHIP program
- Provide counseling services without conflict of interest and in compliance with program regulations
- Conduct individual counseling sessions
- Assess client needs for information and assistance
- Provide referrals to appropriate resources
- Educate clients on Medicare and supplemental insurance
- Assist with Medicare and other health insurance claims filing
- Provide informal claims advocacy when needed
- Identify and follow up on potential fraud or abuse situations
- File reports and complete follow-ups as required
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client information
- Complete ongoing training as required

SHIP/SMP Education & Outreach Ambassador

Purpose of Position
- Educate the community about Medicare, related programs, and Medicare fraud
Responsible To
- SHIP/SMP Coordinator
Responsibilities
- Deliver community presentations to diverse audiences (beneficiaries, caregivers, providers)
- Educate new Medicare beneficiaries, including fraud awareness
- Use Maryland SHIP/SMP materials to stay current on relevant issues
- Represent SHIP/SMP at community events (e.g., county fairs)
- Distribute program materials to community partners (providers, churches, social services)
- Attend required trainings
- Complete reports/forms related to outreach activities
- Maintain confidentiality of client information
- Perform additional outreach duties as needed
