Westminster, MD, Tuesday, November 5, 2024 – The Department of Recreation and Parks is honored to be recognized as a recipient of the 2024 Maryland Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA) Awards. The Friends of Krimgold Park (FoKP) have been recognized with the MRPA Showcase Community Organization Award, while the Memorial Garden at Westminster Veterans Memorial Park received the MRPA Showcase Landscape Site Award.

FoKP formed in 2018, is a dedicated group of volunteers committed to the stewardship and beautification of Krimgold Park, located in Woodbine, Md. Their work has significantly improved the park and community by:

  • Working to eliminate invasive plant species
  • Planning a native plant garden
  • Installing housing for the beautiful birds, Purple Martins
  • Assisting with the cleaning efforts of 4 ponds, which keep this water feature healthy and enjoyable for all

Through their dedication and hard work, the FoKP has transformed the park into a vibrant community hub where people of all ages can gather to enjoy nature, learn about the environment, and participate in activities that promote wellness and sustainability. This achievement is a testament to the support and involvement of the community.

Westminster Veterans Memorial Park, a 33-acre open public space in Westminster, MD, is a lasting tribute to the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.  At the heart of the park is the 1 ½ acre Veterans Memorial Garden, a beautifully designed area by Will Brozy, Park Development Manager, which includes a raised Blue Star Memorial Marker, a national symbol of recognition that honors all U.S. military members, past and present, who have served our country.

Adding to the significance of the memorial is a visual tribute, the Walk of Honor.  The Walk of Honor is a beautiful spiral pathway connecting keystone-shaped sitting spaces where all six branches of the U.S. military are represented and recognized: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Each branch is represented with custom-designed plaques along the path. Visitors are invited to reflect on the values of service, duty, and patriotism as they walk along the path. The park’s landscape is a living testament to the values of sacrifice, honor, and community, offering a place of solace and remembrance for families, loved ones, friends, and brothers-in-arms for all to enjoy.

“Recreation and Parks are thrilled to accept these awards and thank all the committed staff and volunteers whose work and dedication are unmatched,” said Bob Hicks, Director, of Carroll County Parks, and Recreation. “These awards are a testament to the beautiful landscapes of Carroll’s parks. We welcome all residents and Marylanders to visit and enjoy the parks as much as we do!”
