Floods are a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry and can occur anytime, in any location! Preparedness and education start with you. Engage with your neighbors to build a resilient community! Actions you take today to build a “flood smart” home turn into building “flood smart” communities.

Throughout March, the Carroll County Department of Emergency Management and Communications and Carroll County Government are emphasizing the importance of personal preparedness, community awareness, readiness, and decisive action to reduce flood risk. Flooding can develop quickly, leaving little time to react, so having a plan is critical.

Develop a plan for your household, including your pets, so everyone knows what to do, where to go, and what supplies are needed to stay safe. Educate yourself and practice how you respond to flash floods. Remember that most homeowners' insurance does not cover floods. Purchasing flood insurance can save your home and your belongings in the event of a flood. The National Flood Insurance Program provides flood insurance to anyone living in one of the 22,600 participating National Flood Insurance Program communities.

Don’t wait for the next flood to act; begin developing or practicing your flood preparation plan today! Engage with your community to help strengthen the safety and resilience of our entire community.
